Immigrating to the US is a pipe-dream for lots of people from all over the world who desperately want to turn their dream into reality, but although it’s a big country and there appears to be plenty of room for everybody, realistically speaking you can’t just decide to move to the USA and be welcomed with open arms. There are rules and regulations, applications and forms. If you want to immigrate to the US, here’s how you can go about it;

  • Marry your way into the US – yep, that’s one way, if you want to immigrate to the US simply find a US citizen to marry you.
  • Have skills which are in short supply in the US. You’ll probably need a degree and lots of experience in skills which the US are crying out for. It’s generally the medical or scientific types which are needed.
  • Have an employer who wants to transfer you to the US. Of course, it’s not quite as easy as that, the employer has to work hard making a good case on your behalf, so you’ll have to be pretty high up in the company to start with . . . they won’t have just anybody you know.
  • Enter the Green Card Lottery. Every year the USA holds a green card lottery and you can literally win your American citizenship (if you’re lucky). However, there are rules about who is eligible to enter the green card lottery, UK citizens, for example, are not allowed to enter unless their parents were born somewhere other than the UK and hold citizenship from that country. Sounds a bit like discrimination to me! Irish people are welcome to immigrate to the US (the usual conditions apply of course).
  • If you own or buy a business which is worth at least $150k you might stand a chance, even though you’ll need somewhere to live and money for setting up the business for a couple of years before you can apply for resident status. All in all you’ll probably need at least $350k . . . better start saving then.
  • If you’re incredibly rich with around $1m to bring with you, you might be allowed to immigrate to the US, but there’ll be lots of questions to answer about your background, they don’t want people who have gotten their cash by ill gotten gains.
  • If you’re closely related to an American citizen, and they are willing to sponsor you for a few years then immigration to the US might just be possible. We’re talking close relatives mind – moms, dads, sisters, brothers etc not third cousin twice removed on your paternal grandfathers side.
  • You might be able to qualify for immigration to the US on religious grounds. You may be permitted to carry on religious works as a profession, vocation or occupation for a non-profit religious organization in America – it’s got to be a real one though, not just something you’ve thought up for immigration to the US purposes – “The Church of Our Holy Mother, Father & Little Brother Benjamin For Guaranteed Acceptance Into The Holy Kingdom on High” won’t cut it.
  • Claim political asylum or refugee status for immigration to the US. There are no guarantees that this will work, you’ve got to persuade a member of Congress to “sponsor a private bill with legislation that applies just to you”.  Do you happen to know any members of Congress who might do that for you?
  • Where’s she from? What accent is that? Sounds like a bit of a mixture to me . . . oh well, she seems to know what she’s talking about.
